Metrics and Analytics: lj 3

This week's readings talked about RSS feeds and simplifying news consumption. Prior to this, I had no idea what RSS was. I had seen the logo before on different websites and just now made the connection. I learned that RSS brings together a summarized feed of relevant content instead of the user having to scroll through different articles and spend extra time looking at content that they may not like. The readings helped explain how simple it was to access RSS, and it is something I will likely implement into my own news feed to help shrink the time it would normally take to search for content. Additionally, I wasn't aware that Reddit and its subreddits met the qualifications of RSS. I use Reddit almost on a daily basis, so it was nice to see the content relating to something that I understand and know how to navigate. Different social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook have never been too appealing to me as I find it trickier to find content that I like and navigate thr...

Time Diary-Assignment 3

The social media app I will be documenting is TikTok. This is the app I use most, so it will be the best one to gauge my general usage and habits. I will have all 4 days tracked below: Friday: On Friday, February 17, I used TikTok for a total of 2 hours and 40 minutes. I was most active between 12 and 6 pm, which is because I didn't have work that day and had more free time to spend on the app. I just browsed the app, liking several videos and leaving one comment. Saturday: On Saturday, February 18, I used TikTok for a total of 1 hour and 36 minutes. I used the app at irregular times, but I was most active at 12pm and 6pm. I had work this day so that's why my usage was less than on Friday. I liked a few videos but didn't leave any comments. Sunday: On Sunday, February 19, I used TikTok for a total of 1 hour and 31 minutes. I spend most of the time on the app at around 1pm, which was right before I had to go to work. I liked several videos and left two comments. Monday: On ...

Second Learning Journal

The reading We Are Data  gave me a new insight into how data is perceived on the internet. I knew that anything posted online or shared about oneself existed on the internet permanently, but I didn't know that certain legislatures acted as a judge on who can have data removed or not. By giving one of the most used search engines in the world the power to make this distinction, a lot of responsibility must be in place and a smart and active team should keep monitoring this. The article details how Google can get a say in "which search results get censored and which lives are deemed available for public consumption" (Cheney-Lippold 5). Google preserves the right to use its own metric for determining the celebrity status of individuals, and I'm very curious about the grey area of this scale and certain instances where they missed the mark. Someone like Kim Kardashian would obviously meet this standard on most scales, but what about an up-and-coming content creator?...

Hands-On Assignment 2

Media and social networking have to do with online content that allows you to connect with others. The two go hand in hand, as media is part of different social networks and allows for others to view your posts and comment on them, allowing networking and communication to occur. Personally, I use several different social networking sites, including Reddit, TikTok, Youtube, Instagram, and Snapchat to name a few. I use these sites mainly for entertainment, as I seldom post things and just like to view the content of my friends or different creators that I'm interested in. I use each one pretty frequently, at least once a week for all of them, but I find myself on Tiktok and Reddit multiple times a day. I feel that these social media sites let me connect with friends and also view current events and news.

What I think about Social Media: LJ1

Prompt 1:     Social Media has changed a lot over the years and has taken different shapes and formats. However, there are some blanket dos and don'ts that people should follow when using any social media platform. Whenever I use social media, I try to be careful with what personal information I share, such as my name, address, or workplace. I would rather be safe than sorry, as anyone can use personal information that you post against you. Growing up, I would only use social media to watch videos and like posts. I was too afraid to post my own content and didn't really care to use social media in that manner. Nowadays, I post different videos or pictures here and there and try to get more involved online. I currently use Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok to name a few. Starting out, I was very nervous to leave comments or posts of any kind. If I could change anything from back then, I would have interacted with people more and not been as timid out of fear of judgment. Pr...

Hello! My name is Nathan Johnson and I'm From Stockbridge, GA. I moved to the Tampa area when I was about 15 years old, and I've loved it here ever since.  Currently, I'm majoring in Information Science here at USF with a concentration in Information Technology. I hope to eventually become a Security Architect, and this year I plan to get some certifications and possibly do an internship to get more experience. I've worked a variety of part-time jobs during college, including Walmart, Target, and now Five Guys. As far as volunteer experience, I helped at Feeding Tampa Bay and Pasco Animal Services during high school. I really love animals, so it was a super fun experience for me. In my free time, I love playing video games and have been playing them since I was 3 years old. I also love rollercoasters and going to the gym! I would love to start traveling more, as I only went on my first plane trip about a year ago. I really want to go to Disney Land in California to vis...
